Thirsting for God

Do you want to live a fulfilled life spiritually? A key to that, I believe, is thirsting for God. This is what the Scripture says:

To the choirmaster. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah. As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? (Psalms 42:1-2)

Here the psalmist talks about how his soul thirsts for God. Instead of wanting something else, he wants God. Instead of wanting what the world can offer, he wants the living God. Another psalm is similar:

A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. (Psalms 63:1)

Again, the psalmist expresses how his soul thirsts for God and seeks God.

I believe that this is a key attitude that we need to have. This is what Jesus says:

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. (Matthew 5:6)

God is the Source of righteousness, and if your soul thirsts for Him, you shall be satisfied. There is no doubt about it. In fact, I believe that it’s the only source of real satisfaction.

How can we build this attitude?

Learn from the example of the psalmists and express your thirst for God. Say to Him how you want more of Him. Say to Him that you thirst for Him.

As you do that, your heart will grow more longing for God. You will be eager to worship Him and meditate on His Word. It can start a positive chain reaction in your life.

I encourage you to do it now. Express how you want more of Him and start seeking Him. You shall be satisfied.
