Today I’d like to share with you about the heart of giving. I believe that it’s an important aspect of living our lives in Christ.
The fact is, God has blessed us abundantly. He has given us extraordinary peace. He has also given us financial blessings. Now that we have been blessed, it’s our turn to bless others with what God has given us. The Scripture says:
In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ (Acts 20:35)
Almost everywhere else people talk about receiving instead of giving. But this verse teaches us to give. Furthermore, it says that it’s actually more blessed to give than to receive.
Here is the thing: there is joy in helping someone in need. There is joy in giving to a cause. This joy is something we won’t experience if we just keep everything for ourselves. But we will experience it when we give.
There is another truth that might sound counterintuitive:
One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered. (Proverbs 11:24-25)
You might think that by giving to others you will have less for yourself. But these verses say that the opposite is true. When you give, you will be blessed more. When you water, you yourself will be watered. It might not happen on your timetable, but it will happen.
Look around you. Is there someone whom you can help? Is there a cause that you can support? By becoming a blessing to others you will experience the kind of joy that you won’t experience otherwise.
